01 Hello & Welcome

01 Hello and Welcome

Hello, and a very warm welcome to this course on Zotero. My name is Catherine Pope, and I have been an enthusiastic user of Zotero for more than 10 years. I can honestly say that it's made my life much easier. Over the next hour or so, I'd really like to make your life easier too.

[00:00:18] Zotero detects when you're viewing the details of a book or journal article online and allows you to save the full bibliographic details with one click, so there's no need for you to manually type in all that information. If the source is an online journal article or a webpage, Zotero can also save a copy of the full text.

[00:00:40] You can then organise your references into folders - they're called collections in Zotero - and also add notes and tags. This means you can manage your references in a way that's meaningful to you. I'll be showing you lots of examples later on. Anything saved to your Zotero library is searchable, including the full text of journal articles and your notes.

[00:01:02] Zotero works with Word and other word processing software, so you can quickly create perfectly formatted citations as you write. All the major referencing styles are included by default, and you can download thousands more, including many journal-specific styles.

[00:01:22] Your Zotero library is accessible through any computer with an internet connection. By the end of this course, you should have a much better way of managing and citing your references, generating bibliographies and keeping track of what you've read. With the help of videos and notes, I'll guide you through every step. I've included a full transcript and captions for each video, and you can come back to them at any time.

[00:01:47] I've tried to keep this course as succinct and simple as possible. I'm not going to cover absolutely everything that Zotero can do, just what you need to start using it effectively. The next video is on installing Zotero. If you've already done that, you can skip to the video on finding your way around.

[00:02:05] Thanks so much for joining me and I hope you enjoy the course.
